Poet, Novelist and Chronicler of Unheard Worlds

Portrait of Odia author Sujata Mohapatra wearing a traditional maroon saree, with Lord Ganesha in the background

From the author’s desk

I am Sujata Mohapatra, an Odia writer and poet, and I write for the voices that are heard less and the perspectives that are too often overlooked.

My stories begin long before they reach the page. They begin with listening, observing, questioning and researching—the lives of people, the histories of communities, the realities of Odisha, and the silences that surround them. Years of research may go into a book; sometimes, into a single sentence or a single character. Because behind every detail is a life, a memory, a history.

As an author rooted in Odia literature, I am drawn to the spaces where society is most complicated: questions of power and justice, identity and belonging, tradition and change, and the struggles of people whose stories rarely find the centre. My books, including PrajaCourt, Dumamati and Bajeloka, emerge from this constant engagement with people and the world around them.

My characters do not belong to just one person. They flow through many lives. They carry fragments of people I have encountered, stories I have heard, histories I have researched—and perhaps, something of you and me. That is where I believe literature becomes truly relatable.

I write to make the overlooked visible, the unheard impossible to ignore, and the unfamiliar deeply human.
